Looking for inspiration?

A few of my girlfriends have asked me to consider the process of naming a child for them.  What considerations do you make choosing the name for your first born child?  Or the even trickier decision, how do you choose a name for your second child?   You picked the perfect name for your first child, but how do you select another name that matches it!   Not just a name that looks or sounds like a match, but a name that has the same qualities.

Will you retain the theme of your first choice?  If your first choice was quirky will you go with straight-forward for your second child?  If you have a family name for your first choice, are you compelled to have a family name for your second, third or fourth child?

Here is an opportunity to ask the difficult questions, for example:

"Any idea of which name goes with Victoria?"

"I named my first daughter Emeline Joy... what shall I call my first son?"

"I wanted to call my daughter Raven, but hubby hates it because of that TV Show, are there any other names just as cool?"

Tara

ps. Please feel free to ask your questions using the form below.

Uh Oh! Im pregnant!

And whilst I am extremly happy to be having a baby Hubby might've forgotten to tell me that twins run in the family when we were trying to concieve!

Can you believe it twin boys!

Its 26 weeks along and Hubby won't stop pestering me about names! Apparently they cannot forever be Harry Kewl and David Beckham!

So...recently we have been exploring every baby name book, blog and website we can find in order to find the perfect names.

So far we like Myles (thanks to your blog) and Cain.

Small problem though. Both these names are incompatible with the middle names we like.

Any suggestions Tara? We are open to anything!

Thanks,

Victorire

HELP! - my fifth baby girl was born last week and we still havent officalsed the name.

We have Isobele (Belle) Blossom, Williem (Milo) Miles, Beatrix (Trixie) Willow and Caleb (Cricket) Lindsey.

Our new addition to our family is Poppy. However, we are absolutely at a loss as what her middle name should be.

WHAT ON EARTH GOES WITH POPPY!?!?!

I think you can see our taste from the above i.e. Standard first name - different middle names.

We entertained Mabel for a while - to my disappointment it just dosent go.

PLEASE HELP

Help!!
Callum's sister needs a name and it's proving harder than I thought. Mainly because everything we like got stupidly popular so there goes Eleanor (too many Ellies) and Lillian (too many Lilly's) out the window. We've got a thing for the classic girls name, which is good because the middle name is May (family thing).

I like Elizabeth (pro lot's of diminutives, con: lots of people with the name) but it feels a bit safe. I've fallen in and almost out of love with Sylvia and playing with Beatrice. Husband likes Penelope and Harriet but not sure we've nailed it.

Help me super-naming-lady!!

Hi Tara!

We need a boys name and a girls name for the impending arrival of our little bub in Feb!

Our son's name is Talyn Khaleb and my hubby's daughter's name is Natasha Jade so was hoping for something to kinda match those as well. The boys middle names would be Ronald Eduard and the girl's middle name would be Louise.

Thanks heaps!
Vicki

Tara,
I am having a little bit of a dilemma. I'm due to have a baby girl soon and I've been searching for the perfect name. It's my first child and I want it to be truly special and unique (not trendy-unique, genuinely unique) I came across a name and fell in love with it... Jezebel. I love the sound of it. It's so pretty and feminine yet has such a strong feel to it. It sounds similar to the very popular Isabelle but with a more exotic sound. I really want my daughter to embody the qualities of a strong individual and this name is very fitting I think. The problem with it that you've probably already figured out is that it does have an unpleasant association. However, its associations with the biblical figure Jezebel seem so pointless. It seems like such a waste that this beautiful name should be tarnished because of these associations. Ive discovered in my research of the name that the portrayal of Jezebel in the bible is actually historically false, so it seems to me that it was just another case of a strong female character being persecuted for being a woman in power. To me, this makes the name more meaningful. But do you think it would be cruel to give my daughter this name?

Hi Tara,

Just stumbled upon this site and love it. My husband and I are going to start TTC our 2nd and struggling with names. Our daughter is Albany Validay. We would like to stick with "A" names for a girl and "T" names for a boy, but I would do "A" boy names and "T" girls. If we do have a boy, the middle name will be Everett, so something that sounds good with that and our last name. If we have another girl, I'd like her to have the same initials as Albany - AVT.

I like original names that aren't stupid sounding, and something that will go with our daughter's name. I like Auburn or Tinsley for a girl (having hard time with "V" middle name....thought about using Diamond, which is my grandma's maiden name, but don't think it sounds good with our last name) and Tannon or Turner for a boy. Let me know what you think and please give some suggestions.

Please e-mail me when you have time and I can also let you know our last name. Thanks so much!

Hey Tara

We found out today that we are expecting twin baby girls. We already have a little boy called Oliver Rohan who gets called Ollie. We love classic, timeless and pretty names that can be shortened to cute nicknames. I tend to like longer names as our sirname is short and starts with P. I'd love to hear your suggestions!

Here's my situation. I have a name picked out for my future child(regardless of sex) that involves MY maiden name AS the middle name, so obviously NO other names will work. WELLLL, I made the mistake of mentioning it to my SIL, and she is now 5 mos. pG, and refuses to take the name off of her list, and was even rude about the fact that I'm "not even pregnant!?" What the...? HELP!!!

Hi Tara,
Hubby and I are stuck for a girls name. We have Bailey James for a boy, but we've been told we are having a girl.
We both like Ashleigh, I like Makayla (he is warming to this, but prefers Michaela which I don't like), and he likes Jade (which I don't love).
I like pretty names that are a bit different, but not too different. I'm trying to steer clear of the really popular names.
Middle name Jane unless we use something like Jade. Our surname starts with K (can give it to you if you email me). We wont actually name our child until she makes an entrance, but I'd like to be confident about our options.

Hope you can help! Is that enough info for you?

Hi Tara,

I'm hoping you may be able to help with name/s for me too! I have quite a dificult brief...

DH and I both like fairly strong names, but with a girl it still needs to be pretty.

We don't agree on any boy's names as he likes quite traditional names and I like something a bit different.

Due to our surname, any colour names are out.

Oh and in case you didn't put two and two together, #1 is April - and while I am not set on it, I quite like that we all have 5 letter names.

Your mission... should you choose to accept it... :)

Thank you!

Hi Tara,

I'm looking for inspiration for our future babies names and I'd be very interested to see what you can come up with. I am hooked on this site and what really takes me is your appreciation for ALL names...I think that's what makes you so good at what you do!

Now just some pointers on what we're looking for.. with boys names, I like European names (particularly dutch names) to go with our surname which has a pretty strong European sound to it. (Starts with an A, 2 syllables) We already have Christian Paul A****** and Lourens James A******....we are currently thinking 'Willem' for our next boy but i would love any other suggestions you might have. With girls...i love pretty, old fashioned names....Lourie would have been Bethannie (Bethany...spelt differently because my mum is Anne) if he had been a girl...still at the top of our list for now.

Cant wait to see what you come up with!

Hey Tara,

I was hoping i could utilise your wonderful skills for my friend.

She is currently 31weeks pregnant with her 4th boy. She is an amazing woman who will have 4 under 4 (bless her).

Anyway, as you can imagine it is hard enough to pick one name, let alone two but having her fourth boy she is completely stuck.

Her three boys are named Flynn (3 nearly 4), Bailey (2 nearly 3) and Noah (just over 1). They all have the same middle name of 'John' which she willl be carrying on with the next and doesn't really care if they go (as in first and second name) as it is a family tradition, obviously.

Her/their surname is Ratcliffe and she is wanting something that is different. In her words "like something you would name your first" iykwim eg she likes Tigde (Tige - however you spell it).

Again, completely understand if you are too busy but i was telling her about your success on here and asked if she would mind if i asked you.

Thank you

Luv Jade
