Looking for inspiration?

A few of my girlfriends have asked me to consider the process of naming a child for them.  What considerations do you make choosing the name for your first born child?  Or the even trickier decision, how do you choose a name for your second child?   You picked the perfect name for your first child, but how do you select another name that matches it!   Not just a name that looks or sounds like a match, but a name that has the same qualities.

Will you retain the theme of your first choice?  If your first choice was quirky will you go with straight-forward for your second child?  If you have a family name for your first choice, are you compelled to have a family name for your second, third or fourth child?

Here is an opportunity to ask the difficult questions, for example:

"Any idea of which name goes with Victoria?"

"I named my first daughter Emeline Joy... what shall I call my first son?"

"I wanted to call my daughter Raven, but hubby hates it because of that TV Show, are there any other names just as cool?"

Tara

ps. Please feel free to ask your questions using the form below.

We have named our first daughter Aayla Claire. We are pregnant with #2 and thought for sure that it was a boy which we were going to name Asher. We love the name Asher and will save it for a future boy... but what to name our second girl? We aren't necessarily stuck on A's, I just happen to like a lot of them. Any suggestions?

Hi Tara,

Love your site! Ive spent hours today going through baby name sites and found them all to be the same and far from helpful, yours is the first I hope to get any real help from!

I'm 4 months pregnant and this is my first. If im honest I've never thought about names before, but now I feel under pressure!

If it's a girl, I love the name Isla, its unusual but not weird, I don't like common names or names with multiple strange spellings, and although the pronunciation may be misreaad, I'm in love with the name, but i havent thought of middle names. The surname is Povey, so I'm having some problem trying to think of something to put in the middle which ends in the sound of a consonant.

My bigger problem is thinking of boy's first names.

My boyfriend said he would like to name it Alexander if it's a boy, after his grandad, and he brought this to me within a week of me discovering I was pregnant, 3 months ago, and nothing else has entered his head since. His name is Alan Robert, named after his dad, which to me as an outsider to his family looking in, is just confusing, when I shout Alan they both come to me. Anyways, the name Alexander to me, sounds like it belongs to an old person, and abbreviated to Alex, I find is too common. I was one of 5 girls in my class at school called Sarah and I hated it, so its important I dont inflict the same frustration on my own child.

I'm happy to compromise and have Alexander as a middle name but only because of its sentimental value to my boyfriend, but as i can't find anything that i like at all, finding something to compliment Alexander is even harder. His arguement is that I haven't come up with anything better and the longer I'm unsure, the more he gets his heart set on a name i don't like.

Please help if you can!

Hi Tara

Can you help? My second child is due in six weeks and I am stuck for a girl's name, we have one if it's a boy, Spencer Stuart. My son is called Archer Vaughan.

The name I most like at the moment is Gypsy Paige or Gypsy Jean (Jean is my mother's name).

My family are in the UK and I live in Australia. I am concerned that the name Gypsy in Europe has some negative connections to the criminal aspect of some travelers.

My other choices would probably be Tate (not sure about a middle name for any of these) or Alice or Ginger.

What are your thoughts?

Many thanks

Hi Tara!

I stumbled across your blog, since I am struggling with my third (and final) child's name. Our baby is due in November and the sex is unknown as of yet. We have two (very red head, irish) girls and love the irish/gaelic names. Our daughters are Alexa Kathleen "Lexie" and Tierney Grace. We really like Quinn Nicholas for a baby boy but am struggling with a girls name. I love old irish last names , but my husband loves Sophia Rose - any suggestions?
Thanks!
Jen

We're having our fourth baby in August (not finding out the gender). Our three boys are Abraham Thomas (Abe), Sebastian Dane (Sebby or Seb), and Malachi Norris (Ky). I like names that can be distinguished-sounding but have nicknames that aren't too unwieldy, if that makes sense.

Any ideas for names that go with these, either girls or boys? I'm okay with girl names that are a little less traditional---but nothing too trendy. Is Violet too popular? I like the nickname Lettie. I also love other nature-y girl names: Daisy, Juniper, Indigo, Calla. But not sure if they go well with our boy names. And for new boy names, I just don't have many good ideas.

I'd love to hear your thoughts---thanks! :)

Hi Tara,

Love your blog! I hope your baby is doing well!

You seem to be really good with names so I thought I would ask your opinion/advise. My son is named Kingston Robert and we love the name. Now we are preggers again and want a name that fits with Kingston...(we do not know the sex yet.)

I have always loved the name the Tallulah for a girl, (hubby doesn't love it but can be talked into it...LOL) but we already get the "celebrity" association with Kingston...."oh just like gwen steffani". I grin and bear it but it's annoying b/c Kingston is a family name....Also we do not follow pop culture so did not anticipate the comparison. Now I research names A LOT MORE and found out another celebrity child is named Tallulah and I do not want the same problem....

My hubby loves the name Jericho for a boy....I am on the fence. He says it's a combo of his name John and my name Erica. The reason I am on the fence with this name is b/c Kingston is known as a "place" name and Jericho is an old city in biblical times. Is it tacky to have two kids with "place" names?

What boy and girls names do think fit with our little Kingston?

Thanks for the great blog! I have enjoyed reading it!

Hi Tara,
I am 7 months pregnant with our second child and we're not completely settled on the names. Our first child is a daughter named Vivian Jane and we do not know the sex of this baby. We are leaning towards Ruby for a girl, middle name Julia (hubby's aunt's and grandmother's name), but also like Ellery and Eloise. For a boy we like Maxwell, middle name Francis (hubby's grandfather), but also like Everett and Atticus. We have a short one syllable last name and I feel like their first name needs some substance to stand on its own. We like traditional sounding names that are not wildly popular. Any ideas or new suggestions to help us decide? Thank you!

Hi
we love our first sons name and really finding it hard to find something that compliments his name Hugo. Would love some ideas and your thoughts on our short list Sebastian ( mn either Jack, Julius or Felix), Felix (mn Sebastian, Raphael, Alexander) or Julius (mn Raphael, Sebastian)

other names we have sort of gone off are Oscar (due to it being popular), Jasper, Raphael, Augustus ( Gus) due to boy in Willy Wonka.

Girls well I doubt this bub is a girl but first name Ivy mn either Sophia, Estelle or Charlotte our surname is 2 syllables

looking forward to your reply

Hi Tara!!
Don't laugh but I've been a bit of a couch potato lately and have been addicted to the Hopman cup which finished last week. While watching it I fell in love with the name Marat (as in Marat Safin :D), unfortunately this does not go with our surname. Can you advise any other cute Russian Boys names? Thanks it would be a great help!

Hi Tara, I'm moving myself back into the name inspiration queue.

I'm pregnant with my second child (first is Isabella Beatrice) and my husband and I can't agree on any boy names. We've sorted a girl name, but he can't make any serious suggestions, and has nixed everything I've tried (Thomas, Lukas, Markus, Elijah). He can get as far as suggesting he likes Henrietta and Harriet for girls names, but that doesn't help us with boys. We are allergic to made up spellings, and extraneous ys,ls,hs et al. I'd like something with a cute/cool diminutive and it would need to pass the politician or plumber test. HELP, if this kid is a boy it's currently going to be nameless.

Hi Tara
Its been a while since I stalked your blog and to be honest can't even remember if I have logged a request for names in the past!

We are 27 weeks pregnant with our third and are after a bit of inspiration. We have some ideas but would love to know what you would suggest. Needs to go with Ashleigh Jade and Gabriella Paige ;)

Thanks

Jane,

Yeah I do, but I have been in a bit of a lull just recently. I started back at work full-time about three weeks ago and baby Laura is only 5 months old. So as you can imagine my energy is in a real lull at the moment.

Are you the same Jane who was having the problem with SIL stealing her name? I am soo slow :(. If you are the Jane below did your SIL end up stealing it or using something else?
