Blaire's mad question - Unique baby name spelling

So things have gone a bit mad in the 'looking for inspiration' section.  It looks like some dodgy kids from WA Catholic schools are having a bit of a laugh.  And Blaire from WA has asked this tongue in cheek question'

********Question***********

I had quintuplets. is it weird to name them 1 2 3 4 5?

Blaire

******Tara's Response*************

I guess my first answer is "Yes it is weird, what a bogan thing to do Blaire!".

But interestingly this is not such a stupid question.  Apparently the advent of 'text speak' has some younger parents considering using numerals in names.  You know.. Kre8tif spelling.

But do any countries allow you use numerals as part of your name?  The answer is No.

In New Zealand last year a couple tried to name their baby 4Real.  Yep, I am for real, they really did.  Anyway the NZ Government canned the name saying that a name has to be made up of characters not numerals.

In the end the parents named the kid 'Superman'.  Poor kid.

SIDE NOTE:  Although Blaire if you want to call your kids One, Two, Three, Four, Five... go for it.

Halloween - this blog goes off!

So, this is not really a name post, more an observation.  When I first started this blog I posted a list of  My Favourite Witch Names and it is BY far the most popular of my blog posts.  I am not quite sure why so many people search for witch names? image link from sexy-witch.blogspot.com

But I get hundreds of hits per day on it.  And now I can just tell that it is nearly Halloween because it seems like the whole world is doing google searchs for Witch names!

Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying choosing a new Witch name and if you want ideas for your Halloween Witch costume here is a picture from Sexy Witch a particular favourite of mine  about fabulous witches of all kinds.   A fantastic resourse for this time of year.

I hope Red Witch doesn't mind me pointing you in the direction of that blog.

Choosing a middle name for Poppy - a pretty girls name

HELP! - my fifth baby girl was born last week and we still havent officalsed the name.

We have Isobele (Belle) Blossom, Williem (Milo) Miles, Beatrix (Trixie) Willow and Caleb (Cricket) Lindsey.

Our new addition to our family is Poppy. However, we are absolutely at a loss as what her middle name should be.

WHAT ON EARTH GOES WITH POPPY!?!?!

I think you can see our taste from the above i.e. Standard first name - different middle names.

We entertained Mabel for a while - to my disappointment it just dosent go.

PLEASE HELP

****************Tara's Response*******************

Oh dear what a conundrum!!  I love Poppy.  It is my favourite.  I actually love to think of it as a nickname for Ophelia.  Ophelia (Poppy) Mabel sounds just beautiful -- not that I am trying to rename your daughter or anything!!! Oops, my fantasy just getting away from me there.

I remember having the same 'it doesn't sound right' problem with my daughters name. Some names don't have the right 'pace' or something.  In the end I swapped the two around she became Laura Maeve instead of Maeve Laura.  So anyway... have you considered Maeve? Hehe! Poppy Maeve sounds cool.

Now you have kinda broken your pattern with having a botancial name as the first name? That makes it tricky.  Plus Poppy already has the 'ie' sound ending so unless you want rhyming names you have missed out on a big chunk of the quirky name set.  If I am thinking about middle names for a two syllable name like Poppy I usually like single syllable names like Grace or longer names like Elizabeth.  But you don't like the more common traditional names and all the botanicals like so I have had to think broader.

Tara's suggestions:

Sage - this name is ultra cool and fits with the 'botanical' feel of your other girls middle names but isn't too much together with Poppy.

Chanel - super smooth elegant and quirky.  This fashion inspired name sounds smooth after Poppy.

Blythe - such a beautiful elegant spirited name, that means 'gentle, mild, kind'.  I adore the Anne of Green Gables linkage too.

Hope these help?

Tara

Once again I am on the look out for nifty ways to incorporate a names into kids room design.

MadeByGirl name poster

And these digital art prints by MadeByGirl are a fantastic idea for bringing a name into your kids room.  I think they are also great as just an alphabet poster in general as well.

I love how you have to look for a minute to realise what you are looking at.  There are a range of colours for both boys and girls rooms, so check them out!

The names of real babies in Canberra Australia - Canberra Times 11 October 2008

This week the Canberra Times has a great lot of names, it seems that parents are really starting to push boundaries and aren't sticking with just the currently popular names.  I wonder if this is a sign of a beginning change in the most popular lists?  Although I do wonder why there is such a push for names that start with the letters 'Ry'...?

Girls names - The girls list this week has some real gems, isn't Willoughby a brilliant little girls name?  I wish I had thought of it myself!

  • Maddison Gwen Louise
  • Angelina Lily
  • Marley Grace (my favourite this week)
  • Josephine May
  • Rose Esther
  • Abbey Ophelia
  • Rylee Grace
  • Kara
  • Sofia Ann
  • Scarlet Dawn (i do prefer the spelling with two T's)
  • Willoughby Kate (just fabulous!)

Boys names - The boys names are as a group a tiny bit more straightforward 'Canberra' names.  I think from observation that boys names with y's and k's are part of a type of boys name that is particularly common in Canberra.  But there are also a couple of what I think are really sophisticated boys names: Roman and Morgan.  I just adore these two names.

  • Rylan Graham
  • Nicholas Anthony
  • Blake Michael
  • Mitchell Bryce
  • Declan John
  • Valentino Jovan
  • Ryan Jacob
  • Luke William
  • Ryan Moore
  • Morgan Pearce
  • Toby Joe
  • Josiah Raymond
  • Millar Charles
  • Roman Gregorio

Little Valentino is taking on one hell of a name, I wonder if he will be a gorgeous swarthy italian toy boy when he grows up.  Don't you just wish that as a teenager you got to travel to Italy and fall in love with a beautiful Italian boy named Valentino?
 I do!

I hate - bad baby name websites - ten most popular baby names

Bad baby name websites -- Don't you just think it is rude? I hate when you do an internet search for a particular type of name, say Scottish baby names and you get heaps of sites listing 'Top Ten Scottish Baby Names', which is very exciting, but then you look at the list and it starts with Emma for girls and Jack for boys?  Emma and Jack are HARDLY Scottish names!

I mean seriously there is a BIG difference between the ten most popular 'names used in Scotland'  and the idea of a top ten of 'Scottish baby names'.

I would LOVE to know the ten most popular Scottish baby names in the world or even just in Scotland or America or Australia?  I feel like I can't be bothered looking at the popularity lists and making up my own 'Top Ten' lists.   But maybe I will have to start doing it as nobody else seems to be bothering.
