April baby - Middle names
Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 10:33PM Message: We are having a baby girl at the end of April and we have finally narrowed down our choices to two names... I think :).
The two names we have are Isla and Charlotte.
I would really love some suggestions on some middle names. We were initially thinking Charlotte Ann or Isla Marie. Then my mother asked what names we were thinking of and apparently she knew someone named Isla Mae and hates the name Isla. Which is fine with me she will love it if her granddaughter has the name but Isla Marie is kind of close to Isla Mae... So then I thought Isla Grace. I was trying to keep the middle names in the family (my mother is Ann and my grandmother is Marie) but I am not sure if we will now. If you could give us some suggestions on middle names for both Charlotte and Isla that would be great! Thanks so much!

Hi Liz,
Happy to think of some suggestions for you. I love both names Charlotte and Isla. You might have seen a blog post I did on the name Isla; I think it is one of the most elegant of all the names.
Firstly have you considered using both your favourites together? Isla Charlotte has a wonderful sense of energy and balance combined.
Secondly I don't think annoying horrible 'Isla Mae' random friend of your mother whom you have never met, should put you off using Isla Marie. Especially as you are honouring your Grandmother with that name.
Thirdly, I love Charlotte Ann, the name Charlotte is very popular lately. It always makes me think of the Bronte sisters... of course Anne was one of the Bronte sisters too! Very sweet.
Fourthly, my suggestions for good middle names are the timeless names. I have done a previous blog entry about suggested middle names for Clarabelle, there I listed my favourite middle names Grace, Rose, Eve and Jane. But some others that I love are:
- Clare - Charlotte Clare... oh the alliteration is wonderful. What a gorgeous name.
- Celeste - Isla Celeste... has a level of elegance that overwhelms me.
- Adeline - Goes well with both Charlotte and Isla... so does Evangeline and Angeline.
Most of all, I always say that you should go with your gut instincts on names, that way you never second guess yourself or regret incorporating other people's ideas into the name of your child. There is nothing more special than choosing the name of you child.
Please don't let other people influence you too much, have faith in your ideas they are personal and important to you.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I agree that I shouldn't let my mother influence me :). I asked her if her mother liked all the names she chose for her kids(I have 2 sisters, Emily Jean and Christina Marie, and 2 brothers Thomas James and John McBride). She told me her mother hated the name Christina! haha... I will keep you posted on what we choose. My gut is telling me to stay with the middle names I have because they honor family members. I love the name Isla despite what my mother thinks. It is timesless and beautiful and Charlotte is also very beautiful and strong.
I am thinking Isla Jane maybe now... Jane is my mother-in-laws middle name as well as her mothers middle name. But I was also kind of thinking if we went with Isla maybe a more masculine middle name might contrast the femininity of Isla. I was thinking Isla James or Isla McBride (McBride is my mother maiden name). Please let me know what you think!
Liz, I love Isla Jane. I adore Isla James :) And Isla McBride is very elegant. I think you have got some VERY good options there!
It will either be Isla James or Charlotte Ann! 2 and 1/2 months to go. I will let you know which name she ends up with :) Thank you for your input. It is great to hear an unbiased opinion!
Oh choose Charlotte Anne!
So I spoke too soon I guess... My husband is hung up on the nickname Izzie. If we name her Isla could we use Izzie as a nickname? I know it is pretty much up to our discretion but it usually bothers me when nicknames don't make sense. If you don't think this is appropriate do you have any suggestions on Names we could use Izzie as a nickname? I know the usual suspects of Isobel, Isabelle, Isabella, and my name Elizabeth. Those names are out for various reasons. My Husband is going to drive me nuts! haha :)
Of course you can use Izzy as a nickname for Isla. I know it doesn't make perfect sense, but nicknames don't have to make sense LOL. That is the whole point of nicknames. Why is Jack a nickname for John? They have the same number of letters so it isn't shorter! and they don't really sounds the same. So I wouldn't worry at all!
Also, my daughter's name is Laura and her nickname is Rory.
Thanks! I thought we could use it but some people say that it would confuse the pronunciation of Isla. I don't agree. Plus I don't think my husband will even call her Izzie but I am giving him the option! haha
Our last name is deMontel (DEE-Montel) do you think either Charlotte or Isla goes better with the last name? We have also been tossing around Adelia. What are your thoughts? Thanks!
We have chosen a name! It is not any of the names we had originally loved so much but is equally beautiful and very meaningful! Emery Jane! Emery is my husband's grandmother's maiden name and Jane is her middle name as well as his mother's middle name. In addition my grandfather, who is no longer with us, was EJ (Edgar John). We are excited that her name is full of family meaning and (in my opinion) very pretty :) Thanks for all the help! Let me know what you think!
