Iranian - Australian Names

Tara I would be ever so grateful if you could help me!

My brother-in-law has just married an Iranian girl and they are expecting their first child soon-ish.

They are so happy but they have encountered on small problem. As he is Australian and she is Iranian they can't agree on any names!

Please could you help them find a nice name for a boy or a girl. I know they would appreciate it.

Thanks so much - I know you are busy.
Karen

Karen,

This is a great challenge!  I haven't got a complete post for you at the moment but I just wanted to throw out some names that I found on a list of 'Iranian' names which would be easily palatable to an Aussie crowd and might convince your brother-in-law! I will come back with some boys suggestions.  My research has been VERY quick so I am not confident about the authenticity of these as purely Iranian names, the meanings might not be right either -- but hopefully your sister-in-law will know better about each name.

  • Darya - means 'sea'
  • Leila - means 'night' and is now commonly spelt Layla in English.
  • Ava - means 'sound' or 'voice'.
  • Roxana - means 'dawn'.  I put out a vote for this name, it is fairly unusual in Australia and the nickname Roxy is just fabulous.
  • Jasmine - this flower name is the English spelling, Yasmin the Persian.  A beautiful name is just wonderful.

Let me know if we are on the right track?

One day, after nursing Pants at Babies R Us, I noticed a mother nursing her baby in one of the rocking chairs for sale right outside of the nursing room. I greeted her warmly and mentioned that they had a nice nursing room if she wanted to use it. She graciously ...

A couple years ago, my (70- yr- old) dad and I made one of these TJ's gingerbread houses. The one your kids did came out looking a* lot* better than ours!! :)

Your sorta on the right track. I have spoken to my brother-in-law and his wife.

Darya was the favourite so I think that she is after something a bit more traditional.

I think he is after something that just won't be confusing to pronounce and won't label his child as the ethnic in the playground.

Thanks Tara,
I really appreciate your help.
Hopefully with your help my neice or nephew will have a lovely name.

For a boy, I think Reza is wonderful. Very easy and still recognizable as Middle Eastern. I'm not 100% sure it's Iranian, as my friend Reza is from Iraq...

What about the name Lila, I am a persian Lila- not the more common Leila. Lila means the lilac tree. Also Tara is a persian name as well as an english name. Mona is as well though the character from Who's the Boss kind of ruined it for me. Lily is a persian and english name as well. And yes, Reza is a persian name- think Reza Shah, the former king. But for boys I think Darius, Cyrus or Kamran (Cameron) are more cross-cultural as is the name Sam. David is also used in both cultures, though pronounced differently.
