Baby name of the month - Rupert
Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 02:38AM Why isn't anyone choosing this name? One of the coolest, quirkiest and most fabulous boys names around, it fits with the English style Oliver, Felix and Jasper gang and has a certain stuffy elegance that puts it firmly in the bolder Archibald, Leopold, Herbert group too.
When I was a kid the name Rupert seemed a little stuffy and was entirely associated with that lovable character Rupert Bear. But those days Oliver was the sad boy in Dickens' Oliver Twist and Felix was a cat. These days as we turn back to names with an old-fashioned air, Rupert is a real possibility.
When I think of Rupert Murdoch it does kind of take the edge off the name... but I guess having a multi-million dollar namesake isn't that bad? Rupert Everett gives the name some celebrity panache and Rupert Giles the character in Buffy adds some clout; but it is honouring the impending sale of the 7th and final Harry Potter book that makes Rupert a baby name of the month here at 'anamebyanyotherrose'.
Harry Potter is a book that deserves its own category for baby name inspiration. The way it has made Hermione an easily pronounced and generally admired name is amazing. Plus the title character easily cements the worlds current attachment to the name Harry. But it is Rupert Grint, the gorgeous, lovable young guy who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, who inspired me tonight. He gives a modern, dynamic edge to this older style stuffy name.

The name Rupert is of German origin and many books suggest it is a variant of the name Robert. It was made popular in England in the 1700's by Prince Rupert of the Rhine. It has religious role model style from Saint Rupert of Salzburg the founder of the city in Austria.
This name has so much going for it! So I ask again, why hasn't anyone considered Rupert?

I think Rupert just has a bit of an effete vibe - not very rough and tumble or manly. Rupert Bear or Rupert Everett are still what comes to mind, maybe? Rupert Grint might change that when he grows up a bit - at the moment he's still the slightly dorky best friend guy. Also the nickname Rupe is a bit of a downer.
I love the name Rufus (it's our boy name frontrunner) and it has a similar flavour but feels a bit less "wet" to me - maybe just because Rufus Sewell is such an OTT man-beast! Rupert Grint needs to turn into a great big spunk and give his name a make-over...
Skye, you are right for some reason Rupert is a bit wet. :( Some books suggest the nickname Rip! Now that is pretty edgy! I think that Rupert just needs a few more chances, Rupert Grint will definitely be a great big spunk... he already is pretty cool and loads of young girls love him. Apparently Prince Rupert of the Rhine was a bit dashing too!
Rufus is fab and way less wet than Rupert. Maybe from William Rufus, William II of England?

I could imagine Sally with a Rupert or a Rufus. For me it sits in the new fogey school of names like Jasper, Felicity and the like.
Sara, I agree, I could also imagine Busty with a Rupert. :) Oliver and Rupert and Jasper. How CUTE!
Rupert is on my list. I think it's a really cool boys name. Unfortunately I've just got a new job with a boss called Rupert, so I can hardly use it now, particularly if I'm still in this job if I ever have a son!
On the nickname side Tara, Rupert Giles in Buffy had the nickname Ripper. That would be cool indeed.
Sair, I WAS thinking about Rupert for our list the other day!!!
Also Jasper was on our list when Max was born, and still is.
When I think Rupert, I think of Rupert Giles from Buffy (or ripper as was his nickname) lol...
I think of it as a very stuffy English name and would never call my son something like that lol...
